Statistical Process Control

Process, Operation & Organizational Excellence

The term used to describe the set of statistical tools used by plant process professionals is called Statistical Process Control (SPC). Statistical Process Control is used to analyze the process problems and solve them.

SPC refers to the use of statistical methods in the monitoring and maintaining of the processes and outcome of the processes.

SPC allows you to see when a process i s working correctly and when it is not. It helps to monitor your processes, identify deviations from required standards and measure improvements, giving you the data you need for right decision making.

Statistical Process Control is utilized in manufacturing and service applications. It allows a series of steps designed to produce a repeated and consistent result, or process , to remain autonomous from constant oversight.

SPC can be used in such varied environments as chemical processes or information management. Although the product and steps may b e different, the statistical analysis of the process remains consistent.

What Statistical Process Control can do?

  • It provides a means of detecting error at inspection.
  • It leads to more uniform quality of processes and production.
  • It improves the relationship with the customer.
  • It reduces inspection costs.
  • It reduces the number of rejects and saves the cost of material.
  • It provides a basis for attainable specifications.
  • It points out the bottlenecks and trouble spots.
  • It provides a means of determining the capability of the manufacturing process.
  • It promotes the understanding and appreciation of process and quality control.
