ISO 12931 - Performance Criteria for Authentication Solutions Standard is used to combat counterfeiting of material goods. This standard describes performance criteria and evaluation methodologies to identify counterfeit for material goods/products by implementing authentic solutions.

ISO 12931:2012 standard also describes specifications based on risk analysis regarding terms and conditions, authentication process and performance criteria. The standard uses two types of authentication solutions:

Overt: An authentication element which can be detected and verified without needing other resources or tools except the human senses.

Covert: An authentication element which can't be detected and verified by human senses and requires other resources or tools to show the hidden authentication.
